When commissioning one of my lovespoons,
there are many considerations which come into play. To help me create the
proper lovespoon for your circumstances, I ask that you consider the following: 1.Cost - My spoons are completely handmade, one at a time, by me personally. The complexity of the design selected along with the size, type and difficulty of the wood to be worked are all contributing factors in calculating the cost of a commission. I am pleased to offer estimates for all my work, but advise that I retain full copyrights to any and all designs of my making. Generally, I ask you to consider the budget you are comfortable with before the design process begins. This enables me to focus the design within the means of the budget. In cases where the budget is undecided, I am happy to send photographs of past commissions and the price of each as a way to show what is available at a given price. Once we have agreed on price and design and carving has commenced, any alterations made at the request of the client may be subject to additional charges. Shipping is always an extra charge as methods vary as widely as costs. I believe my carvings offer exceptional value for money at any price! Knowing your
intentions for the spoon is very helpful to me in developing a
design. Is it an engagement present, a gift for a wedding,
anniversary or Valentine’s Day? Is it a gift to a family member,
relative or friend? Is it to be very romantic, more familial or a
gift designed to show caring or respect? 3.Size of spoon - Most of the spoons I carve range in size between approximately 8 to 17 inches long with a width of 3 to 6 inches. The thickness of the spoon depends on the type of surface carving which will be undertaken. 4.Type of wood - Some people have definite preferences for the type of wood they wish to see used. They may require a certain colouring to match the decor of their home or their furniture. They may like the texture of one type of wood over another or may have a preference for the type of grain they wish to see. I keep a range of domestically grown hard and softwoods in stock, almost all of it recycled. I avoid the use of tropical hardwoods in my carving and will do my utmost to dissuade my clients from using it. I firmly believe that local woods are every bit as spectacular as anything clear cut from Brazil or Borneo. 5.Finish - I finish my spoons with a Danish oil blend which gives the spoon a soft touchable feel. I stay away from lacquers, plastic finishes and varnishes which I feel are great for furniture but too heavy for a lovespoon. After several coats and vigorous buffing, I apply a beeswax polish and give the spoon one last buff. The final finish is beautiful, durable and easily repaired if damaged. The oil finish I use highlights the grain of the wood without obscuring or distorting it behind the phony shine of chemicals. Over the years the touch of hands will contribute to a gentle patina that cannot be replicated artificially. 6.Design – I work with you to develop a design in keeping with your tastes and visions. A wide range of options exist, from staunchly traditional to the wildest of Celtic or the sleekest of modern. Fusion designs are very popular incorporating elements from many styles or traditions. The options are limitless and I delight in bringing your ideas to reality!
